Our History:

The origins of Atlantic Coast Fence Company dates back to the onset of World War II and thru fourgenerations of Triandafilou’s. It was a Nicholas “Nick” Triandafilou, a former mill worker and Greekimmigrant, whom came to the United States in the early 1900’s (pre-World War I) with his parents and siblings. In the late 1930’s- early1940’s, Nick started up his own company providing home heating oiland burner service to the local Newburyport area. Being a family manand wanting the company to be a family business he named it after histwo sons and called Leon & Teddy’s Oil Company. Shortly thereafter,World War II broke out and Nick’s two sons, Leon (24) and Teddy Sr. (22), entered the armed services.
Soon after being honorably discharged from the United States Army Air Corp inlate 1945, Teddy Triandafilou, Sr. along with his older brother Leon “Trent”Triandafilou started to work for the family business at Leon & Teddy’s OilCompany. It was in 1950; the company expanded to installing fences during thewarmer months to help cover for the lack of heating services needed duringthose times. Today, if you look really closely for them you can still find a fewLeon & Teddy’s fence signs on old chain link fences throughout the greaterNewburyport area and many older furnaces still bear the Leon & Teddy’sinstallation placards on them.
The fencing business was good and eventually it was decided todistinguish the differences between the fencing and oil business with anew company name. It was decided that the fencing business be calledTip Top Fence Company with “Tip Top” coming from the slangmeaning of highest quality of excellence. Tip Top Fence Company wasone of the only fence companies in the area providing the staples ofchain link, wrought iron and cedar fencing to the local greaterNewburyport and Seacoast areas. Selections of cedar fencing was much more limited back in the dayand typically only stockade, spaced picket, spaced board, post and rail and privacy board fencing wasavailable. Due to the limited number of design choices available and the desire to provide customerswith a greater selection of fences that set them apart from the competition a new style of fencing wasconceived. Many people did not like the fact that most fences had a “good” side and a “bad” side; that isa side with the finished pickets or boards and a side with thehorizontal backer rails respectively. It was during this timethat Teddy Sr. coined the term “Good Neighbor Fence” andstarted providing custom built cedar fences that looked thesame on both sides otherwise now commonly known as such.
In 1960, Teddy Triandafilou, Sr.’s son, Ted Triandafilou Jr.,started working for his father and uncle’s business. As ayoung hard-working teenager, he learned how to install fencesfrom his father and eventually became the foreman runningthe crews for the jobs. He soon decided to start a family andhead out on his own. In the winter of 1972, Ted Triandafilou, Jr. and his wife Doris founded AtlanticCoast Fence Company out of their Amesbury homestead. Ted Jr. would work during the day and doestimates at night, while his wife Doris, would work as a local school teacher during the day and camehome to answer customer calls, set up appointments and handle all the book work.
Business was good and they soon out grew their home office and in 1979 purchased the property at theircurrent location in Amesbury, MA and built a warehouse/showroom. In 1980, Atlantic Coast FenceCompany became a corporation and now goes by AtlanticCoast Fence Co., Inc. In 1981, the fence company expandedcreating a division that offers home heating oil at low discountpricing simply called Atlantic Oil Company. In 1983, arecently turned teenager, Ted Triandafilou, III (Ted andDoris’s oldest son) started to working at his parent’s fencecompany over the summer months doing various jobs frompainting to mowing the lawn to fabricating cedar fences.Eventually he started going out with the fence crews andlearned to install fences much like his father had done years before. During the mid 1980’s the companycontinued to grow and in doing so expanded out of the local seacoast region and installing fences as farsouth as Point Judith Light House in Rhode Island and as far north as Augusta, ME. Projects rangedfrom small residential jobs to larger commercial work such as The York Animal Kingdom and theFranklin Park Zoo (yes we have installed tiger enclosures), Dover’s Jenny Thompson outdoor swimming pool, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, MBTA Campus Sites, NH State Prison (Concord & Merideth),Middleton (MA) State Prison as well as Seabrook Nuclear Station. We even opened up a satellite officein Newington, NH for a few years.
It soon became obvious that the demand for quality fencing in the area was growing and we needed togrow as well adding additional work crews and vehicles. Then in 1987, we expanded our warehouse byadding a showroom and offices. While we were growing and ourcustomer base was expanding, we embraced the family traditionand soon Ted and Doris’s youngest son, Dan, started working atthe fence company alongside his older brother during the summermonths. Ted III left for college but always returned to help outwith the family business during his summer breaks. Eventually,Dan too followed him to college and would come back in thesummer to help at the family business.
In the mid 1990’s, the vinyl fencing boom started and Atlantic Coast Fence was one of the first localcompanies to start offering vinyl fences in the tri-state area. Soon the demand for the vinyl fences grewand customers were becoming interested in owning a lifetimefence. Our customers, many of whom were repeat customers, that we had previously installed a cedar fence at their propertyover 20 years earlier liked the idea that they would never have toreplace their fence again and unlike chain link would beattractive and enhance their property. Demand grew so much forthis specialty product it was soon decided that we wouldfabricate our own vinyl fences becoming the first fenceinstallation company in the area to do so. Ted’s younger son,Dan was still working during the summer months while attending college and his older son, Ted III wasfinishing up his master’s degrees in Architecture and Construction Management
In 1999, we purchased a vinyl CNC routing machine and some other specialty vinyl fabricationequipment along with adding another addition to the original warehouse that would more than doublethe size of it. Soon we became the only company in the area to fabricate quality vinyl fences and manycontractors and even other competing fence companies would purchase our vinyl fences.
After graduation from college, he entered grad school to become an architect and eventually earned hismaster’s in architecture and became a licensed architect in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Hewent on to work for numerous architecture firms coming back to run the family business in the early2000’s.
Since our inception Atlantic Coast Fence Company, Inc. has strived for customer satisfaction and theability to provide fencing products to our customers at a reasonable cost without sacrificing quality andcraftsmanship.
Atlantic Coast Fence Company, Inc. has been the industry leader in the North Shore, New Hampshireand Maine Seacoast for over five decades.
